Mission

The Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) administers the State’s motor vehicle laws, promotes traffic safety, protects consumers and personal information while providing customer services to the residents and businesses of this state.

Budget Highlights

The Executive Budget proposes $325 million of appropriations for FY 2015-16, an increase of approximately $7 million from prior year levels. This increase primarily reflects increases in non-personal service costs.

The Executive Budget recommends a workforce of 2,159 FTEs for the Department, a decrease of 4 FTEs from 2014-15 reflecting a transfer of Human Resources staff to the Business Services Center.

Major budget actions include:

  • Legislation to amend the Vehicle and Traffic Law to facilitate New York State's compliance with Federal requirements relating to the issuance of commercial learner’s permits and the disqualification of commercial driver’s licenses and commercial learner’s permits.
  • Legislation to amend the Vehicle and Traffic Law to allow an overweight vehicle permit issued by the Department of Transportation to serve as sufficient documentation without having to also receive an updated registration from DMV, as is currently required.
