Mission

The Office of Indigent Legal Services and the associated Indigent Legal Services Board are responsible for examining, overseeing, and improving the quality of New York's county-based system of providing legal representation to people who are unable to afford an attorney.

Budget Highlights

The 2015-16 Executive Budget recommends $86.9 million All Funds support for the Office of Indigent Legal Services, an increase of $4 million from 2014-15, and a workforce level of 19 FTEs, an increase of 8 from 2014-15.

The increase in funding levels from 2014-15 is a result of the settlement agreement in the Hurrell-Harring, et al, v. State of New York case, regarding indigent legal services in the following five counties: Onondaga, Ontario, Schulyer, Suffolk and Washington.
